A London-based crypto market maker, Wintermute, has established a United States subsidiary registered as a broker-dealer with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). The firm’s move signals an expansion of its operations into traditional securities markets alongside its existing digital asset trading activities.
Wintermute USA will be located in New York City, marking a strategic broadening of the company’s global footprint. The registration process involved securing approvals from both the SEC and FINRA, indicating adherence to stringent U.S. regulatory requirements. This development allows Wintermute to participate directly within the American financial landscape.
According to sources, Evgeny Gaevoy, Founder and CEO of Wintermute, has previously indicated a long-term vision focused on the multifaceted evolution of digital asset markets. The firm’s operations are already facilitating over $10 billion in average daily trading volume across numerous exchanges worldwide. This new subsidiary will initially trade stocks and options from its own account.
The broker-dealer status grants Wintermute USA the capacity to provide liquidity to U.S.-based securities exchanges and over-the-counter counterparties. Furthermore, it will enable self-clearing of digital asset security transactions. The firm intends to act as an Authorized Participant for exchange-traded products, including those linked to digital assets. Wintermute currently supports liquidity across 60+ centralized and decentralized exchanges.
The SEC and FINRA oversee the U.S. securities markets, ensuring investor protection and market integrity. This registration represents a significant step for Wintermute in solidifying its position within this complex regulatory environment. The firm’s expansion has the potential to enhance market liquidity and access within the United States.
