Fresh restrictions are being prepared by the White House targeting Chinese-made optical transceivers used within artificial intelligence data centres. The Federal Communications Commission is expected to announce these rules later this year, prohibiting imports of new models due to security concerns and supply chain vulnerabilities. The move follows recent events highlighting potential risks associated with foreign technology within sensitive sectors.
The White House intends for the United States to maintain a leadership position in areas such as artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency development. This ambition is driving the proposals to restrict the use of Chinese-manufactured optical transceivers prevalent in data centre infrastructure. These devices transmit data via fibre optic cables at high speeds, connecting AI processing units within these centres.
The Federal Communications Commission is currently formulating the specific details of the proposed restrictions. Officials cite concerns that Chinese-produced transceivers could be exploited to compromise sensitive information or disrupt operations. This represents a continuation of efforts prompted by previous episodes involving Huawei technology.
Divyansh Kaushik, an AI policy expert at Beacon Global Strategies, has reportedly emphasised the inherent risks associated with transceiver technologies and underscored the need for robust supply chain security measures. He stated that “transceivers definitely pose a risk.”
A statement released by the Chinese embassy in Washington expressed strong criticism of the proposed actions. The embassy urged the US to cease what it described as “smearing” Chinese companies, warning of potential sanctions.
