U.S. Bank Completes Cross-Border Payment Using Proprietary Stablecoin on Stellar Blockchain

U.S. Bank has successfully executed a live cross-border payment using its proprietary USBDC stablecoin on the Stellar blockchain, marking a key milestone in its exploration of digital assets. The test, which included functions such as minting, redemption, and freezing, validated the bank’s Digital Asset Platform and demonstrated its ability to integrate stablecoin technology with existing financial systems.

The pilot follows the establishment of U.S. Bank’s Digital Assets and Money Movement unit in October 2025 and ongoing collaboration with PwC and the Stellar Development Foundation. The bank’s testing of a custom stablecoin on the Stellar network began in November 2025, reflecting growing interest among financial institutions in leveraging blockchain for cross-border transactions.

The development occurs amid broader industry efforts to advance stablecoin adoption. A group of 21 financial institutions, including Bank of America, Citi, and Goldman Sachs, plans to launch a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin by the first half of 2027. Meanwhile, Fidelity Digital Assets’ Fidelity Digital Dollar (FIDD) reportedly holds $50 million in circulation, underscoring the expanding role of stablecoins in global finance.

U.S. Bank’s pilot highlights the potential of blockchain-based solutions to streamline international payments while addressing regulatory and operational challenges. The bank’s approach aligns with industry trends toward innovation in digital money movement, though widespread adoption of stablecoins remains contingent on regulatory clarity and cross-sector collaboration.
