Following a $500 million investment in World Liberty Financial, Senator Elizabeth Warren has demanded an explanation from the US Commerce Department regarding its policy towards the UAE.

Senator Warren has written to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick seeking clarification on the department’s handling of investments originating from the United Arab Emirates following a significant funding round for the cryptocurrency company, World Liberty Financial. The Trump family are understood to be involved as backers of the venture.
The letter centres on the US government’s approach to the UAE in light of financial transactions involving the Abu Dhabi entity backed by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This entity reportedly made a $500 million investment into World Liberty Financial during January. Further scrutiny is being applied to related transactions, including a $2 billion settlement linked to a company associated with the UAE and cryptocurrency exchange Binance.
The US Commerce Department recently altered its classification of certain entities to ‘Country Group A:5’, granting greater access for the UAE to AI chips. The department stated it intends to “favorably review” license applications relating to chips and servers submitted by MGX, another Abu Dhabi-linked entity. This shift has prompted calls for hearings from a group of senators including Senator Warren, who raised concerns about the $500 million investment in June.
The situation is complicated further by the recent pardon granted to Changpeng Zhao, the former CEO of Binance, an exchange involved in some of the transactions under scrutiny. Lawmakers are assessing this alongside the broader questions regarding the UAE’s financial activities and its connections to World Liberty Financial. The use of a USD1 stablecoin by the company adds another layer to the investigation.
The Commerce Department is expected to respond to Senator Warren’s letter, outlining its rationale for the changes in policy and its approach to license applications. The ongoing review raises questions about potential regulatory oversight of cryptocurrency investments and foreign influence within the US technology sector.
