Joseph Chalom, CEO of Sharplink, has expressed opposition to the proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-8363), which aims to reduce the issuance yield for staking rewards. Chalom argues that this change would undermine DeFi, weaken ETH’s position compared to Bitcoin, and is particularly harmful at a time when Ethereum is gaining institutional momentum.
The authors of EIP-8363 propose a progressive burn of validator rewards to cap the amount of ETH staked at approximately 50% of total supply. If implemented, this would reach a 100% burn rate and zero issuance yield.
Chalom maintains that “the authors are serious researchers and deep believers in Ethereum. We know many of them well, we like them, and none of this is personal.” However, he posits that “well-intentioned people can be wrong,” particularly on the implications for DeFi ecosystems and ETH’s role as a platform for decentralized finance.
