STANDFIRST: Crypto Market Maker Wintermute Plans $1 Billion Investment
Wintermute, a cryptocurrency market maker based in London, has announced plans to invest approximately $1 billion over five years into high-frequency trading and artificial intelligence data-center infrastructure for non-crypto markets. The firm aims to generate more than 50% of its revenue from these sectors by the end of 2027, up from just 10% currently.
Founder and CEO Evgeny Gaevoy attributes this strategy to a decline in crypto activity due to falling bitcoin prices below half their October peak. According to Wintermute, non-crypto revenues are expected to reach $1.36 billion (50% of projected total) by the end of 2027, up from $0.582 billion (10% of total) in 2021.
Institutions accounted for a record 72% of spot trading volume on Wintermute’s over-the-counter desk during the first half of 2026, Gaevoy reported.
