Coldcard Incident Sparks Record Fear in Bitcoin Community

The Bitcoin community is gripped by unprecedented anxiety following a security breach at Coldcard, with sentiment data pointing to a historic low in investor confidence. Santiment Intelligence reported a bullish-to-bearish commentary ratio of 0.58, a level not seen since the 2020 market crash and surpassing the fallout from FTX’s collapse. The incident, which involved a malicious firmware attack compromising 1,200 wallets, resulted in the theft of 1,100 BTC—valued at approximately $70 million.

The attack, executed in a 41-minute window, has raised urgent questions about the security of hardware wallets, even among established providers. Changpeng Zhao, CEO of Binance, warned that “even old wallets with a long history can have bugs,” underscoring the need for users to remain vigilant. Security researchers have confirmed the breach, though the full extent of the incident remains unclear.

Analysts caution that the scale of the theft may have expanded beyond initial estimates, with some suggesting the loss could be larger. The impact on Bitcoin’s price, however, is difficult to disentangle from broader market pressures, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The incident has reignited debates over the risks of self-custody, with critics arguing that no wallet is entirely invulnerable to sophisticated attacks.
