Situational Awareness, a hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has reportedly invested $400 million in an unnamed privately held company following a sharp decline in its assets. The move comes after the fund faced margin calls and a 78% drop in net assets in July, driven by a sell-off in AI-related stocks.
The fund previously invested $100 million in the same company in July, according to filings and reports. Situational Awareness has since sold most of its public equity portfolio to Citadel, a move described by analysts as a bid to stabilise liquidity amid volatile markets.
A May 18 filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission revealed the fund held $1.11 billion across seven Bitcoin mining stocks, underscoring its focus on AI and blockchain-related sectors. However, the identity of the unnamed company and the precise timing of the $400 million investment remain unclear.
The fund’s financial turmoil has raised questions about its long-term strategy. While Situational Awareness has not publicly commented on the latest investment, industry observers note that such large bets amid market turbulence are rare for hedge funds with significant exposure to high-risk assets.
The SEC filing also highlights the fund’s shifting priorities, with its Bitcoin mining holdings now accounting for a substantial portion of its portfolio. Analysts suggest the $400 million investment may reflect a strategic pivot towards private opportunities amid ongoing challenges in public markets.
