Major Bitcoin Miners Sell Large BTC Holdings Amid Price Recovery Concerns

Data from Lookonchain suggests two leading Bitcoin miners, MARA and Riot Platforms, have deposited significant BTC holdings to exchanges, raising questions about their strategic intentions. MARA transferred 200 BTC to NYDIG, while Riot Platforms moved 381 BTC ($24.5 million) to the same exchange around the same time. These moves follow reports of miners disposing of 32,000 BTC in Q1 2026, which reportedly triggered a decline in the network’s hash rate.

The sales come as larger miners navigate financial pressures, with MARA posting over $600 million in losses during Q2 despite holding more than $2.3 billion in BTC. Smaller miners face mounting challenges, exemplified by Poolin’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and its bid to sell Texas mining assets for $52 million. The firm’s efforts to secure approval for the sale highlight ongoing legal and operational hurdles.

Analysts note that the timing of these disposals coincides with uncertainty over Bitcoin’s price recovery, though the “likely intention of selling” remains speculative. The Q1 2026 BTC disposals are described as having “triggered a painful decline” in hash rate, though specific impacts are unclear. Meanwhile, the broader market’s prolonged bear phase continues to strain smaller operators, with Poolin’s situation underscoring the sector’s fragility.
