Citi has announced plans to introduce digital asset custody services later in 2026, beginning with Bitcoin, as part of its new Custody+ platform designed to merge traditional and cryptocurrency custody solutions.
The US-based financial institution revealed the initiative in a press release published on August 18, outlining its intention to offer clients a unified framework for managing both conventional and digital assets. The service, which will initially support Bitcoin, is expected to leverage Citi’s existing digital asset infrastructure to provide “a one-stop custody experience.”
Custody+ aims to address growing demand for integrated financial services by enabling clients to access traditional and crypto custody capabilities within the same system. The firm highlighted the efficiency of digital assets, noting their “near-instant settlement” and round-the-clock availability.
The exact timing of the launch within 2026 remains unspecified, and no details have been disclosed about potential expansion to other cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin. Citi’s move underscores the evolving role of major banks in the digital asset sector, though regulatory and technical challenges may influence the pace of implementation.
