Bitcoin (BTC) surged to multi-month highs on Monday, briefly reaching $81,000 before retreating, with the rally attributed to last week’s U.S. Treasury buyback announcement. The move pushed the Crypto Fear & Greed Index to “Extreme Greed” (83), reflecting heightened investor optimism despite lingering uncertainty over whether the rally marks the start of a new bull cycle or a short-term catch-up trade.
The price increase follows a weekly advance of over $16,000, with ether, XRP, and solana also posting sharp gains of 32%, 53%, and 34% respectively. Analysts pointed to the Treasury’s bond buyback as a key catalyst, with Justin d’Anethan of Arctic Digital noting it “sends a powerful signal that monetary conditions are easing up.” However, opinions remain divided on the broader implications for the crypto market.
Min Jung of Presto Research described the rally as a “catch-up trade,” cautioning that sustained momentum above $100,000 would be needed to confirm a bull market. Jeff Mei of BTSE echoed this sentiment, stating he would “presume a bull market only after we sustain $100,000 for a month.” Meanwhile, macroeconomic indicators such as the upcoming PCE Price Index are closely watched for clues on Federal Reserve policy, with Dominick John of Zeus Research highlighting their potential impact on crypto valuations.
Elevated 30-year Treasury yields, which hit their highest since 2007, underscore persistent concerns over financial conditions, complicating the outlook for risk assets. Analysts remain split on whether the current rally reflects a fundamental shift or a temporary response to near-term macroeconomic signals.
