Japanese banking giant Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) plans to introduce blockchain technology to expedite Japanese government bond transactions, mirroring recent efforts by other financial institutions. MUFG aims to shorten the current 1-3 day settlement period of Japanese government bonds (JGBs) to real-time onchain settlements through a 24/7 operation.
The initiative builds upon successful blockchain implementations in JGB market settlement across global jurisdictions. MUFG’s move is part of broader efforts within the industry, including those by JPMorgan, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMBC), and Mizuho Financial Group, to utilize advanced technologies for enhancing financial efficiency and transparency.
According to MUFG’s strategy, real-time onchain settlement will not only accelerate transactions but also reduce associated costs. This technological advancement aims to reshape how the JGB market operates and could have implications for other traditional financial functions within the broader banking sector.
