Bitcoin’s positive-to-negative commentary ratio has plummeted to its lowest level since Santiment began tracking such discussions, indicating a shift from optimism to fear at 0.58 bullish comments per bearish one. The Coldcard firmware exploit has triggered the worst wave of FUD on crypto social media channels. Notably, Binance’s Changpeng Zhao commented that even old wallets can have bugs and advised investors to stay informed.
Approximately 1,200 wallets were compromised as a result of the attack, with losses totaling nearly 1,100 BTC (worth over $70 million at current prices). The breach occurred more than a day before Coldcard issued a warning to customers about the compromised firmware. Attackers used an automated sweeping tool with unique transaction fees to drain affected wallets.
The incident highlights the potential vulnerabilities in hardware wallet security and underscores the importance of staying informed in the crypto ecosystem.
