Ethereum Researchers Propose Tapered Issuance Burn Proposal

A draft proposal for a ‘tapered issuance burn’ has been released by a group of Ethereum researchers, aiming to adjust validator rewards based on the network’s staking ratio. The initiative, spearheaded by pintail and supported by multiple researchers at the Ethereum Foundation, seeks to address concerns around network security as staking levels increase.

The core concept involves establishing a saturation balance of approximately 60.25 million ETH. At this level, the burn fraction would reach 100%, effectively eliminating net consensus-layer issuance and reducing rewards to zero. The proposal outlines a gradual reduction over 18 months, starting from current reward levels.

Initial discussions regarding the plan commenced on Tuesday within the Ethereum Magician’s forum, following the GitHub release of the draft. Contributing to the debate were figures such as Jérôme de Tychey, dapplion, pa7x1 and Ladislaus von Daniels, alongside community contributor pintail. Justin Drake, an Ethereum Foundation researcher, was also involved in the proposal’s development.

Criticism of the proposal has been voiced by Stani Kulechov, CEO of Aave Labs, who expressed concerns regarding its potential impact on DeFi lending and borrowing strategies. Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale Investments, offered support for the initiative, citing the predictable impact on ETH supply dynamics.

The proposal posits that beyond a certain saturation level, additional staking contributes less to network security, while risks compound. Tychey indicated ample time remains for discussion and pointed to the potential damage to Ethereum’s long-term staked economic security. Concerns have been raised about the effect of this move on “yield-sensitive” stakers.

The research suggests that a reduction in ETH supply could positively impact its price, particularly considering the existing low yield relative to volatility. However, Kulechov warned that implementing the plan post-overshoot would create a significantly larger imbalance and potentially disrupt the ecosystem.

The proposal remains under consideration within the Ethereum community as stakeholders debate its potential effects on the network’s security, economic stability, and broader DeFi landscape.
