Hashdex to Liquidate Bitcoin ETF, Distribute Assets

The Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF is set to be liquidated following a sustained period of low net assets and trading liquidity. The fund, listed on the NYSE ARCA under the DEFI ticker since March 2024, will distribute remaining investor funds after selling its holdings of approximately 225 Bitcoin. This action follows a reported decline in asset levels and liquidity within the exchange-traded fund.

The ETF commenced trading with an initial offering of 200,000 shares on the NYSE ARCA platform. According to publicly available information, the fund’s net assets reached a peak of $17.54 million on May 9, 2025. However, these levels have since diminished, prompting the decision for liquidation.

The Hashdex Bitcoin ETF was launched in 2022 as a Bitcoin futures-based investment product. It has been trading under the DEFI ticker symbol following its approval by regulators. At present, the fund holds $14.25 million in net assets. It currently manages approximately 225 Bitcoin.

The liquidation process will involve distributing all remaining investor funds to their respective owners. Simultaneously, the ETF intends to sell its existing holdings of Bitcoin within the coming weeks. Bloomberg Senior ETF Analyst Eric Balchunas reportedly analysed the fund’s performance earlier this year.

This move signifies a challenging period for Bitcoin-focused ETFs. The asset level previously reached at $17.54 million represents the maximum net assets attracted by the ETF throughout its operation. Trading has been limited to 200,000 shares since launch. Competition within the Bitcoin ETF space continues to be intense.
