Polymarket Seeks $20 Billion Valuation in New Funding Round

Blockchain prediction markets firm Polymarket is pursuing a new round of funding targeting an enterprise value of $20 billion. The move follows a previous investment that valued the company at $15 billion, backed by a $600 million contribution from Intercontinental Exchange (ICE). Annualized revenue has surpassed $1 billion according to the platform’s founder, Shayne Coplan, following fluctuating trading volumes.

The funding round represents an escalation in valuation for Polymarket, previously assessed at $15 billion. The Intercontinental Exchange completed its investment in April. Trading activity experienced a downturn during April and May, however, saw record peaks coinciding with the World Cup tournament. This fluctuation highlights the sensitivity of prediction market volumes to specific events.

Polymarket’s founder contends that the platform operates as an information source rather than a traditional betting environment. Coplan argues that “prediction markets let people ‘put your money where your mouth is’ when they disagree with consensus.” He envisions expansion beyond established news events, including developing an extensive database covering future occurrences – described as “an almanac for the future”.

The company’s revenue figures reached over $1 billion in June, reflecting a surge in trading volume during the World Cup period. This reported figure marks a significant milestone for Polymarket following previous periods of volatility within its user base. Coplan’s assessment that the platform functions as “a very useful thermometer of the world” suggests a belief in its utility for gauging public opinion.

The $20 billion valuation is reportedly being sought, reflecting growing interest in decentralized prediction markets and their potential applications. The company intends to broaden its market coverage beyond headline events, seeking to establish itself as an authoritative source of future forecasting data. This ambition underscores Polymarket’s desire to become a comprehensive resource for anticipating developments across various sectors.
