S&P Global to Acquire OpenZeppelin to Expand Digital Asset Capabilities

S&P Global has announced plans to acquire OpenZeppelin, a blockchain security firm, in a move aimed at strengthening its digital asset risk assessment and ecosystem development offerings. The deal, subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, will see OpenZeppelin operate as a standalone business unit within S&P Global.

The acquisition follows S&P Global’s recent strategic investment in crypto market data provider Kaiko, which secured $110 million in Series B funding. OpenZeppelin, founded in 2015, has facilitated the transfer of over $37 trillion in value through its open-source smart contract software and conducted more than 900 security assessments.

Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings, described the transaction as part of a broader effort to “bring trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain.” OpenZeppelin’s chief executive, Demian Brener, will retain leadership of the company post-acquisition.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, and no exact date for the announcement was provided beyond “Thursday.” The transaction underscores S&P Global’s expanding focus on digital assets amid growing demand for blockchain-related risk management tools.
