**Former LAPD Officer Sentenced to Life Plus 15 Years for Crypto Robbery in Koreatown**

A former Los Angeles Police Department officer has received a life sentence plus 15 years for his role in an armed robbery that targeted a teenager carrying a hard drive containing $350,000 in bitcoin. The sentencing, handed down by Judge Mildred Escobedo, followed a March conviction and denied a request for a new trial.

The robbery, which occurred in Koreatown in December 2024, involved a 17-year-old victim who was assaulted and stripped of the device. Judge Escobedo described the defendant’s actions as driven by “sheer and utter greed,” citing overwhelming evidence against him. The sentence includes concurrent terms, meaning Halem must serve 15 years before becoming eligible for a life term.

According to court records, the defendant, Eric Halem, was a reserve officer at the time of the crime. He faces additional pending charges, including insurance fraud and an alleged crypto-related robbery. The district attorney’s office confirmed the sentence structure and noted Halem’s eligibility for parole after seven years of incarceration.

Co-defendants in the case have yet to stand trial, and details of the alleged insurance fraud remain under investigation. The case has drawn attention to the intersection of law enforcement misconduct and cryptocurrency crime, though no further legal outcomes have been disclosed.
